Search Engine Optimization (SEO), there is a lot to the topic, much more than may be immediately evident. On Page SEO

'On Page SEO' refers to work that is done on the pages of your website. These include parts of each page, such as meta tags in the head section of the page (not visible to visitors), and heading tags (also called header tags). If you are making an HTML site (not using a CMS or Content Management System such as WordPress) you add these by hand to each of your HTML pages, making them unqiue for each webpage, or (even better) have the person who is making your website do this for you. If you are using WordPress, then we highly recommend that (from within WordPress) you install the Yoast SEO Plugin, and use it! Yoast also has a website called Yoast (dot) com.

Please keep in mind that Google likes 100% unique content, (and it will check how unique the content is). It does not like to see content on your website which is 'duplicate content' (from some other site). It likes to see small changes and improvements to your website content every so often. Google bot likes to see new content added — content that is human written for humans to read (not robots). Google has a preference for content that people will find 'helpful'. Avoid making any claims in the content that do not seem 'accurate', Google may check for that as well. It is suggested that your website have a 'Privacy Policy' page. If you have a physcial store front, then consider signing up for Google Business Places, and adding that info to your website.

Off Page SEO

'Off Page SEO' includes getting links from other website to your website. Ideally such backlinks contain desired 'anchor text' (the text of the hyperlink) that you hope your website will rank for in Google. Google frowns on links that you buy, so best not to buy any, or be extremely careful if you do. The process of getting backlinks is often called 'link building' or 'back link building', It is important to note that many (perhaps most) backlinks are 'nofollow' which means that they do not count. Generally speaking, backlinks which are not 'nofollow' are called 'dofollow' backlinks. There is no actual code in a hyperlink for 'dofollow', rather they are all dofollow unless marked otherwise. (The whole process of Off Page SEO is more far more complex than just explained, and results can, and do vary).

Google Algorithm

Google's algorithm is key to SEO. Indeed SEO is the art of making your website rank well under the Google algorithm. This can be done with 'White Hat SEO', 'Grey Hat SEO' or 'Black Hat SEO'. White Hat SEO is safest. Due to the Google algorithm, if possible, it is recommend that you first determine the 'keywords' (which are words or phrases that you want your website to rank for on page one of on Google Search Results Pages (SERPS). Then do the On Page SEO for the pages of your website, then fill in the rest of the content on your web pages. It is kind of a reverse way of making a website, but it works well from an SEO perspective. You find out your desired 'keywords' though 'keyword research' which might include analysis the keywords of your competitors' websites with SEO Tools. So, there is a lot to the art of SEO. It is very easy to get wrong. Google does not publish the details of it's Google Algorithm, and it also changes several time a year. SEO advice you read online might be out of date, or it might not be very accurate. Keeps things interesting!

SEO Cost

SEO costs can vary. It is very easy to spend a lot of money quickly, doing SEO, or having someone do SEO work for you. You may spend a lot of money, and see little if any results. SEO can take time. SEO can also be done badly, with negative results. Buyer beware. If you do not have much of a budget for SEO, then the use of SEO tools might be a way to go, to start with for help on your On Page SEO, but you will likely also need to suplement it Off Page SEO (to get some backlinks — in a good and safe way). If you have a budget, then you may wish to hire somone to help with your SEO work (that is a personal or 'business' decision).

You may want to have the company that provides your domain name and web hosting, (and which maybe also builds your website), also do your SEO work as part of making your website for you, inclduing your keyword research, checking the seach volumes for those keywords (plus your competitor's sites and keywords), and doing the very important On Page SEO work, followed by some degree of Off Page SEO work. This perhaps an ideal, but it means only having one point of contact (which can be convenient and less stressful for you), and one player can't blame the other player if there is an issue and mutiolke players are involved. Like everything else, these are decisions that you can make, whuch might help your wbsite be more sucessful (or not).

Free SEO Tools

Free SEO tools do exist. Some are free, for example Google Webmaster Tools, and Google Analytics. Start with Google Webmaster Tools, but it will only give a part of your SEO answers, you will likely need one or more other SEO tools to get all the information you may need. Some have free versions of them such as Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (free version), and Semrush has a limited free tool. Next we will talk about SE Ranking.

SE Ranking

In addition, there is a very good SEO tool called SE Ranking, that offers a 14 day free trial period (no credit card required & no commitment). They even have a neat column for evaluating the content on your site, with a numeric score for each keyword, which can give you some idea what aspects of your on page content that you may need to improve so it will likely rank better in Google. Plus it can show CPC if you are interested in seeing that. You can adjust which columns display, and even change your language.
